Dr. Tina Shih, a neurologist at the UCSF Epilepsy Center, specializes in treating epilepsy in the elderly, managing patients with drug-resistant seizures and caring for patients who have surgery for epilepsy. She also has expertise in psychiatric conditions related to epilepsy.

Shih earned her medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine and completed an internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. After a residency in neurology at Columbia University Medical Center, she completed a fellowship in epilepsy at the Columbia Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Her research interests include the use of antiepileptic drugs in nursing homes as well as racial and ethnic disparities in epilepsy.

    Dr. Shih is always there to help me and listen to me at her full extent. She makes it easy and understandable to know about any results or changes to my medication. She also takes into consideration my thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Having a doctor like her is a blessing because many times I have been told that I am not the doctor and they should be the only ones taking charge with my health. Not here. If there is something in concern, Dr. Shih is there to fully listen to me.

    Amazing care provider, and deeply knowledgeable about my condition. Answered all questions in depth in a way I understood. I've had epilepsy over 50 years and I learned new information that no one has told me before (or they didn't know) ! Very well listened to at the appointment, both by doctor and resident.

    Clearly able to understand patients POV and desire for technical detail or not and able to evaluate patients learning style and communication style. For me, able to talk technically abt condition and medication, point me to further data, and able to answer my detailed technical questions and followup questions easily without being offended or simplifying.

    Dr. Shih has probably been the best doctor in have truly ever had. With Covid making everything so impossible to accomplish, like appointments and office visits, she has helped me get through the past 2 years by making sure I had all the prescriptions I needed for both of my conditions.     Dr Shih is the best neurologist I've had since the onset of my disorder in 1998. She takes good notes and answers all my questions with excellent knowledge. Most of the Doctors I've had in 25 years have just given me a medication and sent me on my way with very few answers.

    I did not like that a 3rd year medical student in training was allowed to practice evaluating me in my consultation without an MD present. This should have been pre-authorized by me in advance. I should not be charged full fee for this.

    My care provider, Dr.Tina Shih, has been most excellent! For years I suffered seizures while on depakote. Finally my Potawot care provider gave me a referral to Dr. Shih and she gave me a prescription for lamotrigine. My life started improving in all ways almost immediatley. I feel she saved my life!     Dr.Shih is one of the best doctors I've ever had. I've always felt fully respected and listened to. She pays great attention so I feel seen and know the specifics of who I am and my life situation are fully taken into account, and she fully includes me in figuring out any changes in my treatment plan. I rate her very very good.
